17th Australian Masters Games, Adelaide 2019

Report by Kris Kennedy

In the days leading up to the October long weekend five Tuggeranong Vikings, Donna C, Maria C, Brenda D, Cecilia K and Kris K, with their incredibly supportive partners in tow, took to the road and air to compete at the 17th Australian Masters Games in Adelaide.

Asutralian Masters Games 2019

With the swimming component taking place from 5-7 October 2019 at the Matt Cowdrey Competition Pool in the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre the Vikings team settled in for three days of competition. And compete they did, swimming their way to win gold, silver and bronze medals in everything from 25m races to the longer distances of 400m as well as setting some wonderful new PBs.Most notably our relay teams won gold in both the 4x50m Womens Freestyle and Medley relays.

The icing on the cake was finding out that Tuggeranong Vikings had placed 10th in a field of 70+ teams Australia-wide.  Way to go ladies!

Just as important as the swimming side of things the social side of the Games was just as impressive. Saturday night saw the official opening of the Games.  This involved a large contingent of Masters athletes gathering at the Adelaide Convention Centre and marching under the banner of their chosen sport. This was then followed by live music, dancing, and an all-round good time. There were team dinners and a closed street party held in Glenelg to celebrate the Games where there were lots of markets to wander around and local cuisine to taste and consume.

Check out the results of the competition.
